Biographical Sketch

Paulo Cezar Pinto Carvalho received a degree in Civil Engineering from the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME), in 1975. In 1980, he received a M.Sc. in Statistics from the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA). In 1984, he received a Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from Cornell University.

He is a Associate Researcher at IMPA, where he has been since 1979. He was a Visiting Professor at Cornell University from 1988 to 1989. He is a consultant to TecGraf (at PUC-Rio), to Fundação Cesgranrio and to Colégio Bahiense.

His current research interests include Computational Geometry, Geometric Modeling, Geographical Information Systems, Image-based Modeling and Physically-based Modeling.

He also has been involved with several activities related to the improvement of Mathematics education in Brazil. He has been active in organizing and teaching extension courses for High-School teachers and in publishing books for this segment. He is also a member of the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad Committee, which promotes mathematical competitions in Brazil.
