Sometimes, Mahler measures of polynomials in n-variables have been linked to special values associated to objects whose dimension is strictly less than n-1. The aim of this talk, based on joint work in progress with François Brunault, is to give a cohomological interpretation of this "drop" in the dimension, which is linked to the notion of "successive exactness", coming from insights of Maillot and Lalín.
