While the investigation of their aritmetic properties go back to the mid 1970s, for decades, they have been viewed as 'exotic' cousins of the much studied and well-understood Hilbert modular forms. However, thanks to recent progress, things have improved and Bianchi modular forms have gained much attention. In this talk, I will survey some of the basic aspects of Bianchi groups and Bianchi modular forms, focusing on the weight 2 forms and their periods. Time permitting, I will talk about mod p Bianchi modular forms (these are defined using cohomology) and indicate some speculations about their 'periods'.
