Speaker: Tiago Fonseca Date: 10:30 21/02/2024 Title: Two lectures on differential equations and arithmetic: 1-equations from geometry 2-transcendence Abstract: In these two introductory talks, we shall explore some of the classical ways that differential equations interact with number theory. The first talk is devoted to an important class of differential equations that arise naturally in algebraic geometry, the so-called Picard-Fuchs equations (or Gauss-Manin connection, in its geometric form). The second talk will involve the relation between differential equations and transcendental number theory, and we shall discuss classical examples involving the exponential function and modular forms.
